The Walnut Street Synagogue is pleased to offer in-person High Holiday services again this year. Advance registration is required to attend services. Registration is through either completion and return of the form linked below or by following the “REGISTER HERE” link below. We will have a Yizkor book this year. Copies will be available at Yom Kippur services and we will mail them to anyone who purchases a listing. The Universal Cry of the Shofar:
General Sisera, Roald Dahl and the Nature of Evil

The origins of the sounding of the Shofar are complex and multiple, but in essence it is the primal scream of emotion that is common to all humanity. In this class we will look at some of the biblical and talmudic origins of the Shofar’s various sounds – the tekiah, the shevarim, and the teruah – in order to understand its raw power and effect. A surprising short story by Roald Dahl will help us see the universal nature of the vibrations that emanate from this hollowed-out ram’s horn. Rabbi Dr. Raphael Zarum is Dean of the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS). He has a doctorate in Theoretical Physics, a Masters’ in Education, and is a graduate of the Mandel Leadership School in Jerusalem. Raphael is a sought-after lecturer with wildly innovative and meaningful readings of Torah, Midrash, Talmud and the Jewish festivals that reference modern literature, cinema and culture.

Discover the Seder Yehi Ratzone, an Engaging Sephardic/Mizrahi Home Ritual for the New Year

The Seder Yehi Ratzone, a distinctive Sephardic/Mizrahi home ritual, features symbolic foods and blessings for the new year. On Rosh Hashanah, it is traditional to dip apples and honey in hopes of a sweet new year. Jews around the world share other foods as well: pomegranates, pumpkins, beans, beets, and dates–foods that grow abundantly and symbolize prosperity. Rahel Musleah, who was born in Calcutta, India, to a Baghdadi-Jewish family, will guide us through a seder full of fun and delicious wishes and other fall holiday customs and melodies that set a spiritual tone for a year of optimism.
Born in Calcutta, Rahel Musleah is the seventh-generation of a Calcutta Jewish family that traces its roots to 17th-century Baghdad. Today, Rahel is a New York-based award-winning journalist, author, singer, speaker and educator. She is the author of Apples and Pomegranates: A Family Seder for Rosh Hashanah (Lerner/Kar-Ben).
